The legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz said he always read the Obituary column first each morning over breakfast because he was "so happy, so happy" not to find his name there.
Well, last week Bob Dole's name was there and his longtime friend and fellow senator, Joe Biden, delivered a beautiful eulogy. Thanks to a thoughtful photo montage of Dole and Biden together through the years that NBC played to the left of Biden's face as he spoke, we were reminded yet again of just how much Biden's face has changed over the decades.
Mysteriously changed more than his fellow elder statesman's faces have changed and in the wrong chronological direction. While time etched more cragginess into their features and liver spots multiplied on their temples, Biden's skull grew less square, his jawline more refined, his "turkey gobbler" shrunk dramatically, his right earlobe suddenly attached itself to his face and his liver spots grew fewer and fewer. In fact, he went from craggy elder statesmen to baby-faced septuagenarian.
Plastic surgery, you say? Perhaps but consider this: regardless of how old Bob Dole grew or how many years elapsed between "Dole Sightings," you always knew it was him. His face aged dramatically, but its essence never changed. Regardless of how old Donald Trump grows, you will always know it's him. His unique "look" is unmistakable. Pity we can't say the same of Joe Biden's face.
When Senator Bob Dole walked through the Valley of the Shadow of Death last Sunday, some super-red-pilled Conservative media site (I forget which one) posted some snarky RINO smack about him.
Saying our final farewell to a great American patriot is a time to set aside snarkiness. In the presence of Death, that Great Equalizer, I was struck by the Great Peacefulness of America. In his death as in his life, Senator Dole brought Americans together from both sides of the aisle to meet peacefully and respectfully, as people, not merely political parties. Together they grieved, prayed, sang and honored the courageous soldier and public servant that was Senator Bob Dole.
Just as in life, Bob Dole had a few surprises, and a few laughs, up his sleeve for his funeral. In fact, he had the last laugh at the very end of his funeral. Read on!
