Somehow it seems slightly immoral to assign a dollar value and auction off such an old and precious handset print of the document that codifies the God-given Freedoms we enjoy.
Yet today a first printing of the six-page 1787 United States Constitution, "Printed for the delegates of the Constitutional Convention and for the use of the Continental Congress," came under Quig Bruning's gavel at Sotheby's with anonymous bidders from around the world joining in-house, on the phone and online.
Only thirteen copies of this print are still in existence, eleven in institutional settings. The profits from today's sale went to benefit the Dorothy Tapper Goldman Foundation, which in part, funds Constitutional Studies.
Bidding began at $10 million and leapfrogged straight to $30 million where there was a brief lull in the bidding. Brooke in New York (on the phone with a client) looked pleased as her bid held until David Schroeder's on-phone client bid $31 million.
Would Brooke's buyer bid up??? "Fair warning" was said and all watchers held their breath until Brooke raised her hand to bid $32 million which quickly went up to $33 million.
It was a horse race between Brooke and David's on-phone clients, "Fair Warning" was repeated again and again as, at the last moment, the on-phone clients bid each other up, a million dollars each time, until the bid jumped to $36 million, then $38 million. I found myself yelling "C'mon, Brooke" as the hammer came up for $38 million.
Thank God for wealthy Patriots like President Trump, Mike Lindell and David Barton. They are saving America, and her documents, for us one bid, one cyber symposium, one campaign whistlestopping-by-private-jet at a time. God bless them! #trumptriumphant #maga-a-a
